Second day

  • What did you do today?
    • Briefly describe your day’s activities

    • Today, we were introduced to the experiment we were going to be doing. We used the artificial colours present on the M&Ms to eventually find the Rf values and compare it to the Rf values we obtained. To find these values, we used thin layer chromatography (TLC). At the end of the experiment, a little quiz was carried out with mini music instruments to reinforce the knowledge that we acquired during the two days in the lab.

  • What did you learn today?
    • Discuss any learning points from today’s activities
    • We learnt more about artificial colours and the colours present in the standard one.
      • Standard
        • Sunset yellow
        • Tartrazine
        • Brilliant Blue
        • Allura Red
        • Fast green
      • Artificial
        • Red M&Ms (made of allura red)
        • Blue M&Ms (made of brilliant blue)
        • Green M&Ms (made of tartrazine and brilliant blue)
        • Orange M&Ms (made of sunset yellow)

  • How do you feel about today’s activities?
    • Describe how the project has affected your understanding of the discipline and how it may be applied elsewhere
    • The project has allowed me to gain more knowledge about chemical bonds, artificial colours, standard colours and chromatography. This knowledge can be applied to further chemistry experiments I may do in the future.
    • Share your insights for the day
    • The experiments helped me to learn more about chemical bonds and colours which I previously did not know about. The experiment was interesting and cool when the colours were being separated, and we learnt a lot from Dr. Bonanni and the TAs about the experiment.
  • What new questions do you have regarding the discipline?
  • Can these colours be used for other purposes?
  • How else can chromatography be used?
